The early twentieth century is often described as being the golden age of golf. It’s when the sport matured into pretty much what we see today, in terms of course layouts, club selections and international fame for its top players. It’s also when one of golf’s most iconic brands – Titleist – came into being.

They started out in 1932 after Phil Young missed a sitter of a putt and, being a golfer, blamed his equipment. In this case he was convinced he had a wobbly ball, and persuaded his radiologist friend to X-ray it. He was right – the ball had more bias than a crown green wood. So he did what any normal person would do in the circumstances – founded his own golf ball company, with the promise of balance in every ball. It was a smart move, and made Titleist the top golf ball brand.

Titleist branched out into making golf clubs in the 1940s, and it has been one of golf’s most recognised and trusted brands ever since. It was endorsed by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy before Nike came a-knocking, and remains an essential part of thousands of pro and amateur golfers’ collections.
